Why Hydration Matters More Than You Think

brendaenda 038.jpg

As we age, our sense of thirst naturally weakens, meaning many older adults go hours without drinking enough without ever feeling thirsty.

The consequences can be serious: dizziness, confusion, increased falls, UTIs and even hospital admissions that could have been prevented with something as simple as an extra glass of water.

The NHS recommends 6 to 8 cups of fluid every day and it doesn't have to be just water. Tea, coffee, squash, milk and soup all count.

At Homelium Care, our carers make hydration a natural part of every single visit, because the small things really do make all the difference

UTIs in Older Adults — What Every Family Should Know

UTIs are one of the most misunderstood conditions in elderly care. In older adults, the classic signs — pain, burning, frequent urination, are often completely absent.

Instead, watch for:

  • Sudden confusion or disorientation

  • Unusual agitation or changes in mood

  • Increased falls or unsteadiness

  • Unexplained tiredness or loss of appetite

  • Fever or shivering

  • Cloudy or strong-smelling urine

These symptoms are easy to put down to age or an off day, but they could be a sign of a UTI that needs prompt attention.

The good news? Many UTIs are entirely preventable with consistent hydration, good personal care, and someone who notices when something changes. That's exactly what Homelium Care provides, every single day!

How Homelium Care Helps

Behind every visit our carers make is a quiet, consistent commitment to the health and wellbeing of the people they support. From encouraging a glass of water to noticing the subtle signs that something might be wrong, our team is trained to protect health, not just respond to it.

Our carers across Essex, West Sussex, Dorset, Hampshire and Northamptonshire provide:

  • Regular hydration support — encouraging fluids as a natural part of every visit

  • Personal care — delivered with dignity and sensitivity, reducing the risk of UTIs

  • Early detection — noticing changes in behaviour, mood or appearance and acting quickly

  • Medication assistance — managing prescriptions safely and monitoring for any effects on hydration

  • Companionship — because health and happiness go hand in hand

Whether your loved one needs a few hours of support a week or full-time live-in care, Homelium Care is here to help, with a care plan built entirely around them.
