Bonfire Night is a highlight of the autumn season, filled with fireworks, sparkles and community celebrations. But for many older adults, the loud noises, cold weather and busy crowds can make this time of year more challenging.

At Homelium Care, we believe everyone should be able to enjoy seasonal traditions safely and comfortably. Whether you’re caring for an elderly loved one or supporting someone in your community, here are some simple home care tips to help ensure a safe and happy Bonfire Night.

1. Keep Warm and Cosy

November evenings can get very chilly, especially after dark. Encourage your loved one to dress in layers, wear a warm coat, hat, scarf, and gloves, and have a blanket ready if they’re sitting outside.

If they’re staying indoors, make sure the home is warm and draught-free. A hot drink and cosy blanket can go a long way in keeping the evening enjoyable.

💛 Tip: At Homelium, our carers can help prepare warm drinks, meals and ensure the home is safe and comfortable for colder nights.

2. Watch Fireworks from Indoors

For many older adults, especially those with mobility challenges, dementia, or sensory sensitivities, crowds and loud fireworks can be overwhelming.

Consider watching the celebrations from indoors near a window, or on TV. This way, your loved one can still enjoy the bright displays without the discomfort of the noise or cold.

3. Keep Pets Calm and Safe

If your loved one has a pet, remember that fireworks can be stressful for animals too. Close windows and curtains to reduce noise and keep lights on to minimise flashes.

Our companionship carers often help clients and their pets feel at ease during noisy events like Bonfire Night, providing reassurance and company when it’s needed most.

4. Be Mindful of Noise Sensitivity

For those living with dementia or anxiety, sudden loud noises can be distressing. If fireworks are expected nearby, let your loved one know in advance and offer gentle reassurance.

Listening to calming music, watching a favourite film, or chatting with a carer or friend can provide a welcome distraction.

5. Stay Safe if Attending an Event

If your loved one does wish to attend a local fireworks display, plan ahead.

  • Choose a venue with accessible parking and paths.

  • Avoid standing too close to the bonfire or fireworks.

  • Bring a folding chair and wrap up warmly.

  • Ensure someone is always nearby for support.

Our care teams often accompany clients to local events, ensuring they can take part in community celebrations while staying safe and comfortable.
