Halloween is a fun and festive time for many, but for some older adults, the sudden noise, door knocking, and spooky surprises can feel a little unsettling. At Homelium Care, we want everyone to enjoy this time of year safely and comfortably. Whether you or a loved one live alone, receive home care, or simply prefer a quieter evening, here are a few simple ways to stay safe and secure this Halloween.

1. Keep Your Home Safe and Well-Lit

If you’re expecting visitors, make sure your pathway and doorstep are well-lit and free from obstacles like pumpkins, decorations, or fallen leaves. A clear path reduces the risk of trips or falls. If you’d rather not have trick-or-treaters visit, you can keep your front lights off or place a polite sign on the door, something as simple as “No trick-or-treaters please, have a lovely Halloween!”

2. Only Open the Door to People You Know

Halloween brings lots of knocks at the door, often in costume! If you’re unsure who’s visiting, it’s perfectly okay not to answer. You can also ask a family member, neighbour, or your Homelium carer to check in that evening if you’d like a little extra reassurance.

3. Stay in Touch

If you live alone, let a friend, relative, or carer know your plans for the evening. Keeping your phone nearby can help you feel connected and safe if you need anything. Homelium carers are always happy to make an evening visit or call to check everything’s okay.

4. Be Cautious with Candles and Decorations

Candles in pumpkins look lovely but can pose a fire risk. Try battery-powered tealights instead, they’re just as atmospheric and much safer. Avoid hanging decorations that could get in the way of walking paths or stairways.

5. Enjoy the Season in Your Own Way

You don’t have to join in the Halloween hustle to enjoy the season. Try baking something autumnal, watching a cosy film, or enjoying a chat with your carer over a cup of tea. At Homelium, we believe this time of year is about warmth, comfort, and connection, whatever that looks like for you.
