As the days get shorter and the temperatures drop, winter can be a difficult time for many, especially for older adults and those living alone. At Homelium, we know how much the cold weather can affect our clients and their families. That’s why we’re proud to be bringing back our Caring Through the Cold campaign for the second year running.

This campaign is all about helping people stay safe, warm, and connected during the winter months. We’ve seen first-hand how even small acts of care can make a huge difference, a warm meal, a friendly visit, or just knowing that someone is checking in can transform a person’s day.

Why We Started “Caring Through the Cold”

We launched Caring Through the Cold last year because we wanted to do more than just talk about winter risks, we wanted to take action. Every year, cold weather contributes to increased hospital admissions and health complications for older people. But beyond the physical effects, loneliness and isolation can have just as much of an impact.

This year, we’re continuing to spread awareness and practical support for families who may be wondering: Does my loved one need extra help at home this winter? How can I make sure they’re warm, safe and cared for?

Our teams are here to offer advice, reassurance and a helping hand for anyone facing those questions.

What We’re Doing This Winter

Throughout the campaign, our branches will be:

  • Handing out cosy blankets to our vulnerable, elderly clients and those in the community who come to our events

  • Carrying out wellbeing visits and offering free care consultations for anyone concerned about an elderly family member

  • Sharing practical advice to help people recognise the signs that someone may need support, such as struggling to keep warm, skipping meals, or feeling isolated

  • Offering two hours of free respite care to give family carers a chance to rest and recharge

  • Partnering with local libraries and community hubs to bring information and guidance directly to the people who need it most

We believe that care doesn’t just start when someone becomes our client, it starts with a conversation, a question, or simply checking in.

Why This Matters

Cold weather can be more than just uncomfortable, for some, it can be dangerous. We’ve met families who didn’t realise how quickly things can change when temperatures drop and we’ve also seen the relief that comes when support arrives at just the right time.

Caring Through the Cold isn’t just a campaign for us, it’s a promise to our communities. A promise to keep showing up, to keep caring and to remind people that they’re never alone.
