Six women smile around a table, knitting with yarn in a bright room with windows and craft supplies.

What Is Knit and Natter?

Knit and Natter is a relaxed, informal gathering where people come together to craft, chat and connect, no agenda, no pressure, just good company and great conversation.

At Homelium Care Northampton, we host our free monthly Knit and Natter on the second Thursday of every month from 10am to 12pm at the PHAB Centre, 11 Sheraton Mews, Sheraton Close, Northampton NN3 2NL.

Whether you're an experienced knitter, a complete beginner, or someone who simply wants to get out of the house and meet new people, you are genuinely welcome here.

Why We Started Knit and Natter in Northampton

Loneliness is something we think about a lot at Homelium. It affects people of all ages, not just older adults and it has a real, measurable impact on health and wellbeing. Research consistently shows that social connection is one of the most important factors in living a longer, happier life.

Our Knit and Natter sessions were created with that in mind. Not as a formal care programme or a structured activity, but as a simple, human space where people can show up, be themselves and leave feeling a little less alone.

Because sometimes, what makes the biggest difference isn't a medical intervention or a care plan. It's a warm drink, a friendly face and an hour where you don't have to be on your own.

Who Is It For?

Everyone. Genuinely.

We want to be really clear about this, our Knit and Natter in Northampton is open to men and women of all ages. You don't need to be a carer, a client, or have any connection to Homelium. You just need to want to come along.

Whether you're:

  • An older adult looking to get out of the house and meet new people

  • Someone who has recently moved to Northampton and wants to build connections

  • A family carer who needs a break and some time for yourself

  • A younger person who loves crafting and wants to find their people

  • Someone who has never picked up a knitting needle in their life but is curious

You belong here 💙

Do I Need to Know How to Knit?

Not at all. Our sessions welcome all levels, from complete beginners to seasoned crafters.

If you knit, crochet or do any other kind of crafting, bring it along. There's nothing quite like a relaxed chat with your hands busy.

If you've never tried knitting but have always been curious, we have equipment available for you to borrow, so you can have a go without committing to buying anything yourself. Our friendly regulars are always happy to share tips and help beginners get started.

And if crafting really isn't your thing? Come anyway. Plenty of people come along purely for the conversation, the company and the chance to get out of the house for a couple of hours. The chat is just as important as the knitting, honestly, often more so.

What to Expect

Our Knit and Natter sessions are deliberately relaxed and informal. There's no register to sign, no structured activities to follow and no pressure to talk if you'd rather just sit quietly and craft for a while.

What you will find:

Free hot drinks and refreshments — a warm drink is waiting for you when you arrive

🧶 Knitting equipment available to borrow — so no need to bring anything if you're just coming to try it out

💙 A warm, welcoming atmosphere — our team and regular attendees make sure everyone feels included from the moment they walk through the door

🗣️ Great conversation — from local news to life stories, hobbies to family, the chat flows naturally and there's always something to talk about

👋 Friendly new faces — many of our regulars have made genuine friendships through the group, and we'd love for you to do the same

The Real Value of Getting Together

It's easy to underestimate what an hour out of the house can do for your mood, your outlook and your sense of connection to the world around you.

For some people who come to our Knit and Natter, it's the highlight of their month. A reason to get up, get dressed and get out. A group of people who genuinely look forward to seeing them. A reminder that they're part of a community, not just living alongside one.

We'd Also Love Your Help

If you have any spare wool or knitting needles at home that you no longer use, we'd be so grateful for any donations. This helps make sure that anyone who wants to have a go can do so, regardless of whether they have their own supplies.
