Live-In Care in Dorset: Sheila & Georgina's Story

Some people make it to 100 and slow down. Sheila is not one of those people!

"I'm very tall and extraordinarily pretty," 

she says, with a smile that makes it impossible to disagree. At a hundred years old, with a card from the King to prove it, Sheila is sharp, warm, funny and very much at home in the place she loves most: her own house in Dorset, with her daughter Georgina close by and her live-in carer at her side.

This is their story.

A Family That Chose to Stay Close

Georgina Wormald is Sheila's daughter and, as Sheila puts it with characteristic warmth, "a marvellous daughter." 

Around ten years ago, Georgina and her husband made the decision to move back to Dorset to be closer to her mum. With a small family, just the two of them, she knew that if Sheila ever needed more support, it would fall to her.

"We moved back here so we could help Mum," Georgina explains. "Especially with just a very small family, just me and my husband. So we could be near and support her."

It's a situation many families across Dorset will recognise: a parent getting older, a daughter doing everything she can, and the quiet worry that it might one day not be enough.

How Homelium Came Into Their Lives

Sheila's need for more structured care came gradually, then all at once. After a couple of hospital stays, it became clear she needed a care package, support four times a day to help her stay safely at home. Dorset Council referred the family to Homelium, and from that point, things began to change.

"Homelium were found for us," Georgina recalls. "So I didn't have to look and I was so lucky. Because it's been such a good experience."

She's honest that the referral was unexpected. "Dorset Council said Homelium are going to be looking after your mum, and I thought, I haven't even heard of you. But it was such a good experience. Better than I ever could have expected."

From Four Visits a Day to Live-In Care

As Sheila's needs evolved, so did her care. What started as four daily visits eventually led to the family realising that more consistent, round-the-clock support would give Sheila and Georgina, a better quality of life.

"We realised we couldn't do it alone," says Georgina, "which led on to having a live-in carer, which Homelium organised for us. And it's working really well."

The difference has been profound, not just for Sheila, but for the whole family.

"I could sleep again," Georgina says simply. "I think that's the main thing. I could sleep, and have peace of mind that I knew my mum was being really looked after. Really, really well."

Staying at Home and Why It Matters

For Sheila, remaining at home isn't just a preference. It's everything.

Sheila has experienced episodes of delirium, a condition that can cause significant confusion and distress, particularly in older adults. Georgina is clear about why home is the right place for her mum to be:

"With the delirium that comes in waves, it's easier to deal with here for her. I think it would be even more upsetting to be in a different place. So it's been great to keep her at home."

Sheila, in her own words, puts it even more simply:

"It would be awful having to be living away from home. It's just been lovely, really. It has worked out very well. Yes, I think we've been very fortunate."

Familiar surroundings, familiar faces, and the gentle rhythm of home life, for someone navigating the challenges that come with reaching 100, these things aren't just comforting. They're genuinely important for wellbeing and stability.

What They Value Most About Homelium

When asked what she values most about the Homelium team, Georgina doesn't hesitate:

"How supportive they've been. They've always been on the end of a phone, and I've phoned a lot, so it's amazing they still pick up."

She laughs, but the sentiment is real. Having someone to call, someone who listens, who helps problem-solve, who sorts out everything from equipment to beds to care arrangements, has made an enormous difference.

"You feel listened to, supported. You provide solutions. From how pleasant and caring all the carers are, to sorting out all the equipment, it's been, we've been so lucky, haven't we?"

She pauses, then adds something that says it all:

"It's been an excellent experience. Especially when it's not something you've chosen, it just fell into our lap. And it could have been a completely different experience. But it has been a really, really positive one."

Sheila's Advice - on Life and on Care

At 100, Sheila has earned the right to dispense wisdom and she does so with characteristic simplicity.

Asked for the best piece of advice she's ever been given, she doesn't need to think for long:

"Look on the bright side."

Is that how she's made it to a hundred? "Yes. Why not? Best you can do, really."

And what always makes her smile? Dogs, specifically Georgina's two, who visit regularly and are greeted with great enthusiasm. And jelly and custard. And, one suspects, her daughter.

What Georgina Would Say to Families Considering Live-In Care

For families who are weighing up their options, worried about a parent, uncertain about care, not sure where to turn, Georgina's advice is straightforward:

"Go for it. Look into it. If you want your loved one to be at home, I think it's a really good solution. An excellent solution. It just depends on each person's individual situation, but it's definitely the best for my mum right now."
