Meet Kelvin — The Homelium Carer Who Calls His Clients Family

Man in scrubs sits on a couch in a home interior; overlaid text reads Homelium, Life as a Home Carer, Kelvin’s Story.
Meet Kelvin!

There are some people who just get it. Who understand instinctively what it means to care for someone, not just in the practical sense, but in the human sense. The kind of person who notices when something is off, who stays a few minutes longer when it matters and who genuinely feels the impact of the work they do.

Kelvin is one of those people.

A carer with Homelium Care, Kelvin sat down with us recently to talk honestly about what the job is really like, the parts that surprise you, the moments that stay with you and why he would encourage anyone considering a career in care to take the leap.

What he said reminded us exactly why we do what we do.

Why Kelvin Chose Homelium

For Kelvin, the decision to join Homelium wasn't complicated. When he visited the website, something just felt right.

"When I went on the website, I just felt like I was in the right place."

But it was during his shadowing period, those first days of training where new carers shadow experienced colleagues on their rounds, that he knew for certain he had found his home.

"During my shadowing times, I used to make a couple of mistakes and I used to get assistance and guidance. I felt like I belonged here. So I had to stick around and till this day I feel very confident."

That experience of being supported, guided and genuinely welcomed into the team is something Homelium takes seriously. Nobody is expected to know everything from day one. Training, guidance and a team that has your back, that is what being part of Homelium looks like from the very beginning.

What the Job Actually Involves

Kelvin's role covers a wide range of support for the clients he visits, from medication administration and personal care through to social visits and grocery shopping. Every day looks a little different, which is one of the things he loves most about it.

He describes the Homelium team dynamic as something that feels genuinely collaborative, even when working independently out on the road.

"It's more like teamwork. I have other carers calling me, assisting me, people helping me, especially when I'm in a place I'm not familiar with or in medication situations. Even when I'm working independently, whenever I'm in need of any assistance, I call the office and the guys assist. It's more like teamwork."

For families considering home care, this is something worth knowing. Your loved one's carer is never working in isolation. Behind every visit is a whole team of people, coordinators, managers, colleagues, making sure everything runs smoothly and that any concerns are picked up and acted on quickly.

What Kelvin Loves Most About Being a Carer

Ask Kelvin what he loves most about the role and his answer is immediate.

"What I like most about being a carer is just knowing that I'm responsible for making somebody smile. If I did a morning shift, I could be the first point of contact to that person. If I do the bedtime visit, I'd be the last person who made that person smile or feel better. I feel like I have a really good impact and I like that."

It is a perspective that captures something fundamental about home care, something that gets lost in the logistics of care plans and rotas. Every single visit is an opportunity to make a real, positive difference to how someone's day feels. And for people like Kelvin, that is not a responsibility they take lightly.

The Moment That Stayed With Him

When we asked Kelvin to share a moment where he felt he had truly made a difference, he told us about a client who had recently lost his partner.

"I walked in and he wasn't really vocal as usual. After I found out what had happened, it was my last visit of the day, so I opted to spend longer with him on my own personal time. He ended up opening up and telling me what he was going through. He appreciated it and requested if I could do that more often. I really felt appreciated."

The conversation that followed between them was one of those quiet, human moments that defines what good care really looks like. The client told Kelvin something that has stayed with him since.

"He told me that even the smallest things matter and go a long way. Making someone's brew the right way can put a smile on their face. Spending a little extra time, being observant, trying to gain more social conversation, it lights someone up."

For families, this is the kind of care that Homelium strives to provide on every single visit, not just the tasks, but the genuine human presence that makes a loved one feel seen, valued and less alone.

What Surprises People Most About Working in Care

We asked Kelvin what he thinks would surprise people most about the role and his answer was honest, warm and completely unexpected.

"Sometimes you get attached, whether you like it or not. When you go to a client's house and they're not there, you feel bad. You wait for them to come back. You miss them. Whether it's personal care, medication or social visits, they become part of your family. And you become part of their family too."

For anyone wondering whether professional carers genuinely care about the people they support, Kelvin's words answer that question better than anything we could ever write.

What Kelvin Would Say to Anyone Considering a Career in Care

If you are thinking about a career in home care but are not quite sure whether it is right for you, Kelvin has a message for you and it is one of the most honest, encouraging things we have ever heard said about this job.

"The first time you enter someone's house, you're a stranger. A couple of days, you're family. It's more like an adventure. You meet so many good people. Some are vocal, some are jovial, some are funny. I encourage anyone to join. It's very interesting."

Home care is not a job for everyone, but for the right person, it is one of the most rewarding, meaningful and genuinely fulfilling things you can do. You do not need years of experience. You do not need a long list of qualifications. You need kindness, reliability, patience and a genuine desire to make a difference.

Kelvin had all of those things before he ever walked through a client's door. The rest came with time, support and a team that believed in him from day one.
