Technology is always moving forward, but sometimes these changes can leave us feeling a little left behind. One of the biggest changes happening across the UK right now is the phasing out of 3G mobile networks.

For many years, 3G allowed us to make calls, send texts, and use the internet on our phones. But now, mobile providers are turning it off to make way for faster, more reliable 4G and 5G services.

At Homelium, we know this change might feel worrying—especially if you or a loved one uses an older mobile phone. Don’t worry—we’re here to explain what’s happening, why it matters, and how you can stay connected.

What is 3G and why is it stopping?

  • 3G stands for “third generation” mobile network. It was introduced in the early 2000s and helped millions of people use the internet on the go.

  • Over the years, newer, faster networks—4G and 5G—have replaced it.

  • Because of this, phone companies are switching off 3G so they can use the space for better, more modern services.

How could this affect me?

If you have a newer mobile phone, you probably won’t notice any difference. But if you use an older phone (especially one bought before 2015), you may:

  • Struggle to make or receive calls.

  • Lose access to the internet on your phone.

  • Have problems sending or receiving text messages.

What you can do

  1. Check your phone – If your phone only uses 3G, it may stop working. You can ask your mobile provider or a family member to check for you.

  2. Upgrade if needed – You don’t need the latest smartphone. Even a simple, easy-to-use 4G phone will keep you connected.

  3. Ask for help – If you’re unsure, your phone provider will be able to advise you. Or you could ask a trusted friend, family member, or even one of our Homelium carers to help check.

Why this change could be positive

Although it might feel like a nuisance now, the end of 3G will mean:

  • Clearer calls with better sound quality.

  • Faster internet browsing, even for simple things like checking emails or looking up bus times.

  • Stronger connections, especially in rural areas.

Homelium is here to support you

We understand that keeping in touch with loved ones is vital, especially as we get older. If you’re worried about how the 3G switch-off might affect you, we’re always happy to guide you or your family through the changes.
