Being a caregiver to a loved one is one of the most selfless and compassionate roles a person can take on. But too often, family caregivers put their own mental health last—and over time, the emotional toll can become overwhelming.

At Homelium, we see first-hand the dedication of family carers. This Mental Health Awareness Week, we want to shine a light on your wellbeing, because you matter, too.

The Silent Struggle of Family Caregivers

Unpaid carers often face:

  • Emotional exhaustion

  • Chronic stress or anxiety

  • Feelings of guilt when they take time for themselves

  • Isolation from friends or usual social activities

Many people don’t even identify as "carers", they’re just being a daughter, son, partner, or friend. But recognising the role is the first step to getting the support you deserve.

Tips to Protect Your Mental Health

1. Set Boundaries

It’s okay to say no. You can’t do everything, and setting limits is healthy for you and your loved one.

2. Take Breaks

It is important to give yourself respite. Even short moments of rest can help recharge your mind. Try:

  • A walk outside

  • Listening to calming music

  • Practising deep breathing or meditation

3. Talk to Someone

You’re not alone. Speak to a friend, therapist, visit a local support group, or if you are local, come visit our Caregiver Coffee Mornings for a free hot drink and a chat. Just voicing your thoughts can bring relief.

4. Stay Connected

Don’t let care duties isolate you. Even a phone call or online chat with a friend helps fight loneliness.

5. Ask for Help

Whether it's help from family, a respite carer, or home care services like ourselves, asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.

Support Available for Family Carers

You may be entitled to practical and emotional support, including:

  • A Carer's Assessment from your local authority

  • Access to respite care services to give you a break

  • Financial help such as Carer’s Allowance

  • Mental health support from organisations like Carers UK, Mind, or your GP

We can also guide you through local resources and provide flexible care options to take some of the pressure off.

Take some respite for yourself by taking advantage of our 2 hours free care offer and have some much needed time to yourself.
